… by the opening of its very own immersive digital art centre, modelled on the success of the Carrieres des Lumieres at Les Baux de Provence.
The Hall des Lumieres which opens today is at 49 Chambers Street, near City Hall. New Yorkers are being treated to the dazzling ‘Gustav Klimt: Gold in Motion’, an apt choice maybe for this former bank.
Klimt’s glorious portraits and landscapes will be projected across the walls, columns and floors, each image carefully tailored to fit the space available, and the show accompanied by a specially-composed soundtrack. Alongside the 30 min display, there’s a short session of the brightly-coloured work of Austrian painter Friedensreich Hundertwasser who was inspired by his fellow countryman.
Some of you may remember this double show playing at Provence’s Carrieres des Lumieres.
The NY building is the historical Emigrant Industrial Savings Bank which was established to help people arriving from Ireland in around 1850. It was one of the first Beaux-Arts skyscrapers to be built in the city.
The Culturespaces creative team have utilised 33000 sq ft of space including the main tellers’ hall and even the original bank vault.

Hi Lynne,
It is amazing how CultureSpaces has leveraged the Carrières des Lumières into so many places worldwide! And to think it started in an abandoned quarry nearly 50 years ago.
Hope all is well.
