A couple of ideas here for the coming weekend.
Four generations of the Ely family have been taking photographs in and around Aix for over 130 years. Sunday 18th September sees a rare opportunity to see their work together.
‘Aix on Themes’ is at the Chateau du Tholonet, 10-17hrs, free. The 9 themes being illustrated are here: https://associationceppia.fr/event/aix-on-themes/
In the nineties, the family produced a wonderful book of photography which recorded daily life in Aix, long-gone people bustling through streets which are so familiar to us; but also events that must have marked the population such as the last public guillotining in Aix, or the fate of young resistants captured by Jean Ely, himself just 16 at the time.
Entitled ‘Photos Henry Ely Aix: La Seconde et Le Siecle’, it’s a fascinating read and insight into Aix life.
Try to find one at one of the second hand book-markets if you can. I looked to see if it is available online and it is – £352.44 + £32.48 carriage from the US. Now treating my precious copy with great care!
The second treat of the weekend has to be a trip round the old town in a rather elderly car. Les Vieux Volants de Provence offer a choice of beautiful classic cars for a short spin, and interesting chat with the owner as you rattle round in anything from a Ford A Roadster to a Peugeot 203 or Ferrari Dino. Fees go to charity.
When and where? Sunday 18th September, 9:30-18:00, Place de Verdun.
Free guides to the heritage weekend are available from the tourist office in Aix – thanks to D. for checking this out for Aixcentric.
