…..is my new book which is being launched this week.
It is a journey across from ancient sun-drenched Arles through Saint-Tropez and Saint Paul-de-Vence to the Italianate beauty of Menton, following the artists who flocked south to the area where their creativity flourished under the sun.
Van Gogh worked in Arles and Saint-Rémy, Signac painted in Saint-Tropez, while Renoir and Matisse settled in Nice. The story unfolds of these artists who knew each other, supported each other and even painted together. Paul Cézanne was born here of course but so were many others, not so well known: Joseph Garibaldi, Charles Camoin, Auguste Chabaud, Pierre Ambrogiani are all colourful artists inspired by their native Provence.

Stand where Van Gogh painted his beautiful ‘Irises’ in Saint-Remy-de-Provence
The book has details of museums and galleries, spots where the artists stood to paint, walks following in their footsteps, and studios where visitors can almost feel the presence of the great masters.

Where to find bright new street art in Marseille, France’s oldest city
The modern art scene is fascinating too. You can see an enormous Louise Bourgeois spider in a lake in an extraordinary vineyard-turned-contemporary art centre; visit the narrow streets of the Panier in Marseille for some bright and splashy street art; and enjoy pop-up sculpture and art shows in pretty inland villages in the summer months.
The region has seen lots of investment in the arts – find out about Marseille’s stunning MuCEM and Musée Regards de Provence, the stylish Musée d’Art Classique de Mougins, and the new Musée Jean Cocteau right on the sea-front in Menton.

Enjoy local pictures at the Musée Bonnard in Le Cannet.
‘Paysage du Canet par temps de mistral’.
Individual artists are often celebrated in the area: there’s the Musée Bonnard in Le Cannet, the Musee National Fernand Léger in Biot and the newly renovated Musée Picasso in Antibes (all three great art in interesting buildings)….and don’t miss Matisse’s chapel in Vence which is so memorably beautiful, especially when the sun floods through his stained glass windows. He called it the culmination of his life’s work.
Lots here for art-lovers to get the most out of, and enjoy, a trip to the South of France, in 144 pages, full colour throughout.
Price: £29/c. 33 euros, online. More expensive than my last book but colour printing is expensive and b&w just wouldn’t work for this.
If you are in Aix, ‘Art in the South of France’ is available now at Book In Bar; otherwise please order here: http://www.lulu.com/shop/lynne-alderson/art-in-the-south-of-france-the-inside-story/paperback/product-23586102.html.

Open the door to Cézanne’s studio – it’s just as if he left it!
