Raising the Curtain on Filming in Provence
This is the theme of a talk on the local film industry here in Provence at the IAU in Aix-en-Provence, on Tuesday May 3. It’s organised by the MAABN, in partnership with the IAU.(*)
Provence has a long tradition of film-making. In fact the first ever moving film (Train Entrant en Gare de La Ciotat) was shot by the Lumière Brothers right here.
In recent years, films like Fatima (winner of 3 Césars), Prophète, A Good Year, French Connection, the Pagnol films (originals and remakes), Taxi, Transporter… series such as Mafiosa (season 1), Panthers, Marseille (the new Netflix
series)… soaps like Plus Belle la Vie and Camping Paradis have all been shot locally.
The region is also home to the world’s biggest film festival (and film market) in Cannes and has stated its ambition to become one of the Mediterranean’s leading film hubs. In addition to the studios at Belle de Mai, new facilities are starting to come on-line, including Provence Studios in Martigues.
Vassili Meimaris (Regional Film Commissioner), Olivier Marchetti (owner and CEO of Provence Studios) and Richard Bower (consultant in film tourism) will present what’s happening on the sets, in the news and behind the scenes.
