…….firstly the Canebiere will be pedestrianised, as it will be on the last Sunday of each month; and secondly, the town’s first ‘Quartier des Arts’, for street art, will be inaugurated.
This is all part of the move to counter-balance the developments at La Joliette by attracting locals and tourists back into the town centre.
The Canebiere which celebrates its 90th birthday this year will be the venue for entertainment all day, the aim being to transform it into what they are calling the ‘Broadway marseillais’. There will also be a ‘parcours numerique’, 12 boards from the Vieux Port upwards, details here: https://www.frequence-sud.fr/art-44678-la_canebiere_transformee_en_parcours_numerique_Marseille
The street art will be nearby along rue du Theatre Francais where the metal shutters of shops, and walls, will have large portraits of people who studied at the Lycée Thiers (including Pagnol) alongside portraits of present day students. Three street artists have been hard at work – the portraits are impressive – and the area will be inaugurated on Sunday at 14:30.
This initiative must be welcomed by the businesses in the town centre who have been affected by all the new shops at the Terrasses du Port.
