What a treat to have a vegetarian lunch this week that was neither a goat’s cheese salad nor an omelette!   Look what I was given for my lunch….

The owner, Luc, serves a balanced meal based on what he gets from the market and the homely kitchen is open to the dining room so you can see your plat being prepared.

L’Ancienne Epicerie began life as a B&B with four pretty bedrooms and a salle à manger on the ground floor. A month ago, they decided to extend their services to providing lunches and afternoon tea with home-baked cakes.

It’s a warm little place where you find yourself surrounded by traditionally branded tins – Carambar, Banania, mustards – old advertising signs, jars, copper pans, old photos – on typical grocers’ shelving.

The food is mainly bio, often vegetarian, but they do serve meat and fish.  Lunch was 13€ and included a dessert and coffee but I didn’t get that far!  Recommended.

L’Ancienne Epicerie, 12 rue Cancel, Aix.  (Walk down the place des Cardeurs and this little road is second on the right).  06 08 85 38 68. www.unechambreenville.eu. Open Tues-Sat.
