‘Little Women’ was a brave choice for director Greta Gerwig to tackle as the book is so well-known and most of us have seen at least one filmed version. But critics have praised her film in which narrative opens in 1868 with Jo as an aspiring writer, using flashbacks to 1861 to build the picture of the March family.
The actors are wonderful as are the costumes and the cinematography – such a visual treat. The film is enthralling and Gerwig comes up with a moving and creative ending.
However, la fille Aixcentric and I did wonder what people unfamiliar with the story would make of the constant chopping between timelines. I don’t know how well known this US classic is in France for instance?
Rotten Tomatoes gives it an approval rating of 95% based on 280 reviews, while Metacritic stats indicate ‘universal acclaim’. We loved it too and came out of the cinema feeling it to be a very happy start to 2020….and now huge fans of Timothée Chalamet, a great ‘Laurie’.
‘Les Filles du Docteur March’ is at the Renoir, VO.
