From tomorrow, May 7th, drivers in UK-registered cars can be fined up to 750 euros for speeding in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and ten other European countries. Fines will also be imposed for not stopping at a red light, using a mobile while driving, and not wearing a seat-belt. It’s estimated that this will result in up to 1/2 million fines a year in France alone.
However, European cars will still not be fined in the UK.
This is because in Europe, the vehicle owner is deemed responsible for the offence, whereas under UK law, it is the driver. Why the foreign driver or vehicle owner can’t be pursued by the UK authorities isn’t clear (to me at least) from what I have read in the British press. Here’s the article from today’s Telegraph: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/05/05/british-motorists-continent-face-640-speeding-fines-saturday/
