At last – ‘Indian Palace’ arrives at the Mazarin cinema in Aix this week.  Called ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel‘ in the UK, it has a cast which includes some of Britain’s finest actors.

Judi Dench, newly widowed,  is one of the pensioners who chooses to go to India to live in the eponymous hotel.  Along with her is Maggie Smith who, far from her ‘grande dame’ persona, does a splendid turn as a East End racist. Of course Bill Nighy is excellent in an unhappy marriage with Penelope Wilton. What will happen when these assorted characters arrive in India?

The run-down hotel, managed by Dev Patel from ‘Slumdog Millionnaire’, is not at all what they were expecting, but India works its charm on most of them and their lives begin to take new shape.

It’s a light film, romantic, well-scripted and of course impeccably delivered; for me it was a great opportunity to spend a couple of hours transported to the delights, the colours and the scents of Jaipur.

Out in DVD on Wednesday is Carnage, Polanski’s film about two couples who meet up to resolve issues following a spat between their sons.  It was originally a stage play, so all the action happens in one place – a far cry from having a cinematic trip to Jaipur.  But again good acting carries the day – Kate Winslet and Jodie Foster are brilliant.

France 3 has some interesting programmes this week.

‘Des Racines et des Ailes’ which features regions of France on Wednesday focuses on the world’s 5th biggest French-speaking city – Londres!  It’s always fascinating to see the UK through French eyes.

Thursday night sees an excellent film ‘Le Concert’ – the story of a Russian conductor who is removed from his post because he won’t sack Jews from the orchestra.  Reduced to being a janitor in the theatre, one day he intercepts a fax requesting the orchestra to travel to play in Paris – and he decides to recreate his old orchestra – a moving story.

Finally Thalassa on Friday is featuring Porquerolles. A must-see.

Happy Viewing!

Tomorrow night – Friday 13th – at 20.35, Thalassa (France 3) will be showcasing Marseille during the first part of the programme.  There will be aerial shots of the coast which, on the trailer, looked stunning, then an item on ‘le nouveau Marseille’ – progress on the buildings which are going up.  They will then show divers encountering a shark followed by coverage of an oursinade.

OR…if you’re in Aix at the weekend, you can watch the Carnaval which many local children have been busy preparing.  The theme this year is ‘La Fabrique de Rêves‘ – dreams, nightmares, angels and demons.
