Lots to do in Aix in March. Here are some ideas:

Monday 12th March Blanche Neige.  Public rehearsal of Snow White at the Pavillon Noir.  Starts at 18:00hrs.  Free.

Tuesday 13th March – 30th April  Les Rencontres du 9e Art. Fourteen places in town will be hosting exhibitions and workshops devoted to the comic-strip. All free. Much more detail on www.bd-aix.combut the following two events look particularly interesting:

Tuesday 13th March – 31st May  Aragon ou la main que dessine’ is at Cézanne’s studio. The vernissage is being held on Friday 16th March in the presence of the mayor, Maryse Joissains Masini, various tourism chiefs and a couple of writers.

Details on www.aixenprovencetourism.com click Culture then Expositions. Don’t try the atelier Cézanne website as they still think it’s December. Free for this expo – you only payto go into the studio.

Wednesday 14th March  Portes Ouvertes at the Ecole Superior d’Art d’Aix-en-Provence. Chance to look around the workshops and enjoy the students’ work. Free. 10-18:00hrs.

Saturday 17th March  Carnaval at Le Tholonet. A good opportunity to witness a village carnival.  The children will be processing at 15:00hrs before the battle of confetti, goûter and entertainments. http://www.letholonet.fr.

Sunday 18th Ronde d’Aix.  If you are interested in cycling, this is the event for you. It’s the 64th annual race which involves racing along the ave des Belges and round the Rotonde, 80 times. Free to watch. Amateurs start at 13.30, professionals about 15:00hrs. www.avcaix.com.

Monday 19th March-13th May  ‘Alix a Aquae Sextiae takes place at the new Tourist Office. Alix is a cartoon Roman hero who first came to fame in 1948 in the pages of Tintin.

 Here, thanks to 3 illustrators, he visits the original Roman settlement of Aix and explores the key buildings. On view also some archaeological finds. The vernissage takes place on Tuesday 20th March at 18:30hrs. Details on the tourist website above. Free.

Monday 19th – 31st March Artists Independants Aixois at the Hôtel de Ville gallery. Open 10:00-18:30hrs. Vernissage Monday 18:30Hhrs.

Thurs-Sat 22nd-24th March. Marseille Provence Airport roadshow comes to town. You chance to find out more about flights/timetables. Thurs 22nd– Gare St Charles, Marseille; Fri and Sat – Les Allées Provencales, Aix.

I understand that Ryanair start flights, from the end of March, to Zadar (Croatia), Bordeaux, Ibiza, Oujda, Paris Vatry.

Saturday 17th March – 20th May  Le Temps de l’Eau….Take Me to the River. To fit in with the Forum Mondial de l’Eau which is taking place in Marseille, this international group of 21 artists have created works around the topic of water. Photos, paintings, installations. At the Musée des Tapisseries. Open daily exc Tuesdays. 13:30-17:00hrs. Guided tours Fridays and Saturdays at 15:00hrs. 

If you enjoy the watery theme, the Eaux Precieuses/Eaux Sauvages photo expo is still on at the Galerie d’Art du Conseil General des Bouches-du-Rhône (the little gallery in the cours Mirabeau next to Monoprix).  See previous blog.  Recommended.  Free.  Open daily except Mondays, 9:30-13:00, 14:00-18:00hrs. Ends April 9th.

Sunday 25th March Aix Ville Baroque– Guided tour by historian Nicole de Palatinat. 8€. Book at the tourist office.
