If you need a respite from reality, and don’t we all right now, I can thoroughly recommend this new rom-com, English title, ‘What’s Love Got to Do With It?
We follow the story of feminist documentary-maker and dating app addict Zoe (Lily James), who has had too many disappointments. Meanwhile, for her friend next door, doctor Kaz (Shazad Latif), the answer is to follow his parents wishes and go for an arranged (or “assisted”) marriage to a bride from Pakistan. Zoe films his journey from London to Lahore to marry a stranger and ponders this different approach to finding love.
The screenplay is by Jemima Khan who is in a great position to tackle the subject: as Jemima Goldsmith, glamorous daughter of a wealthy Jewish family in London, she married the equally glamorous Pakistani cricket star, now politician, Imran Khan.
And the film was produced by Working Title (Bridget Jones, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, Fargo, French Kiss, Four Weddings…). who can be relied on for interesting settings, strong story-lines, colour, human interest and positivity, which this film has in spades, as well as ‘Bollywood’ dancing. Two hours’ diversion…
Enjoy it from tomorrow, March 8th, at the Cézanne cinema.
