Here’s two hours great escapism for you.
Film synopsis: In 1950s London, a widowed cleaning lady falls madly in love with a couture Dior dress, deciding she must have one of her own. After working to raise the funds to pursue her dream, she embarks on an adventure to Paris that will change not only her own outlook — but the very future of the House of Dior.
It’s based on the Paul Gallico novel, published back in 1958.
I hadn’t realised that it spawned a series: subsequent titles in the series are Mrs. ‘Arris Goes to New York (1960), Mrs. ‘Arris Goes to Parliament (1965), and Mrs. ‘Arris Goes to Moscow (1974). (The original U.K. titles were Mrs Harris Goes to New York, Mrs Harris MP, and Mrs Harris Goes to Moscow.)
Interesting change of title in the French version.
Anyway, it’s a charming film, with a great lead performance by Lesley Manville. Support the cinema!
At the Cézanne from Wednesday.
Paul Gallic and Lesley Manville – what a treat! Thanks for this. Angie Pyman
