Just opened at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, the exhibition “Monet – Mitchell” which creates unprecedented “dialogue” between the works of Claude Monet (1840-1926) and Joan Mitchell (1925-1992).
Joan Mitchell left her native Chicago in 1967 to spend her last 25 years living and working in Veitheuil, overlooking the Seine and the poplars that Monet loved to paint.
Forgoing travel after his last visits to London and Venice in 1903, Monet settled down to paint the garden he was creating, producing massive canvases with tight focus on water, on flowers. Joan Mitchell loved to wake up to the sweeping countryside views and the violet light that Monet recorded, but concentrated on painting her feelings and emotions in vivid colours on massive canvases. She executed her work with fast, powerful strokes of paint: ‘my painting is abstract but also a landscape without being a copy of it’.
The exhibition comprises 70 exhibits of which 50 are a retrospective of Joan Mitchell’s work. Until 27 February 2023.
