Critics have been predictably sniffy about ‘Ticket to Paradise’, starring George Clooney and Julia Roberts as warring divorcees. Despite their mutual dislike, they reunite to try to prevent their lawyer daughter from marrying a local seaweed-farmer whom she has met while on an extended holiday in Bali.
She looks to be about to make the same mistake as they did, so off they go to Bali to save her from his clutches. They end up on the same flight, seated together, of course they do, cue lots of funny dialogue between the pair, and an unexpected actor as the pilot.
The shoot actually took place in Queensland during lockdown. Julia Roberts isolated with the Clooney family and one can imagine what fun they had. They are old friends and have appeared together in Oceans 11 and 12, and Money Monster.
They have great chemistry on screen, the plot skips along agreeably, and the locations are dazzling. The Guardian likened it to a ‘glossy corporate video’ which could be argued, but sometimes a well-acted romcom is just what is needed.
In the middle of a house move and endless packing cartons, my two hours of stolen escapism in the cinema to see this film really was a much-needed ticket to paradise; plus it’s good to support the cinemas which are really struggling to re-engage their audiences right now.
At the Cézanne, from 5th October.
PS: If you do go, make sure to stay for the titles!
