Visitors to Aix have, since 1990, been able to follow in the footsteps of Cezanne courtesy of 3,500 markers in the pavements and footpaths, as he wended from home to studio to painting sites…and then to cafes in town after a long day at the easel.
Now the Tourist Office have launched an app, based on their brochure, ‘Sur Les Pas de Cézanne’. ‘Experience Cézanne with your smartphone’, we are invited.
As visitors approach 32 key sites on the walk, geolocalisation activates an information panel and a virtual guide with key facts about the site. This is V1 which was launched last week. The next version will introduce paintings in virtual reality of, for instance, the house at Jas de Bouffan, the quarries at Bibemus, and the garden at his studio, all favourite subjects.

Cezanne painted his home 36 times in oil, and 17 times with watercolour.
It was designed by ‘Graffiti’ who recruited local actors from ‘Le Ruban Vert’ to be the avatars.
The app is in English. Details of access are here via the mairie: https://www.aixenprovence.fr/Application-Sur-les-pas-de-Cezanne, Try as I might, I can’t find it on the tourist office website.
I have downloaded it but can’t access all the features as I am not in Aix.
La Provence gave a favourable report but said that good earbuds are needed due to street noise. If you are planning to visit Aix and want access to the info, here is a link to the print brochure which is downloadable. https://www.aixenprovencetourism.com/brochures-guides/
