Browsing in an English charity shop, I came across ‘Mississippi Mermaid’, a film from the 60s by Francois Truffault. It tells the story of a bachelor in la Reunion played by Jean-Paul Belmondo. Lonely, he advertises for a prospective marriage partner and eagerly rushes to greet the Mississippi, the boat bringing her to the island. Enter Catherine Deneuve.
The pair find themselves travelling to France, where they decide to stay in Aix!
I was of course fascinated to see shots of the town in the 60s. Meanwhile, Monsieur Aixcentric was fascinated by the old cars. It’s a pretty good story as you would expect from Truffaut – copies are available through Amazon. French with English subtitles.
While on the subject of Catherine Deneuve, she stars in the film ‘The Midwife‘ which is on BBC in the early hours tonight. Filmed in 2017, it’s had good reviews (88% Rotten Tomatoes), so let’s hope it soon pops up on iPlayer. What an amazing long career she’s had.
Hello Lynne and welcome back. I’m going to look for the film . It looks wonderful with two favorite actors in Aix en Provence. Maybe Finac will have it? Hope all is well. We miss you.
Hi Liz,
Two good films ….lack of Hollywood budgets isnt a problem for the French. They rely on telling engrossing stories. Recommended!
Lovely to hear from you.
X Lynne
