James Baldwin’s House in Provence – what happened …
September 5, 2020 by aixcentric

Here’s an update from Jules Farber: ‘The real estate developer went ahead in demolishing two wings of the house in which James Baldwin had his office and living space. The remaining building now serves for pool equipment and other technical installations plus a caretaker’s apartment.’
Instead there is: LE JARDIN DES ARTS : 18 luxury apartments built around a large outdoor pool on 2.3 hectares of landscaped gardens . Sea view. Situated short stroll from Saint-Paul de Vence.
Jules believes there is no indication anywhere at the project acknowledging that Baldwin lived there for 17 years until his death.

He continues, ‘Thus, people only find this little-known awareness of Baldwin’s long presence in Provence in books or museum exhibitions . But not in Baldwin’s own literary work which was always written as if he were in Haarlem. Only his last work, a play, ‘Welcome Table’, described his life there but he died before the work was completed’.
At least we still have Jules’ book to remind readers of the rich social and cultural life of this very Provencal house which played host to so many 20th century artists.
