We were all saddened when the Librarie de Provence in the cours Mirabeau closed at the end of March last year – it was yet another in a series of closures of independent bookshops. So it’s a great pleasure to report its rebirth in very distinguished premises,
the Hotel Boyer d’Eguilles, and to learn that there will be a café attached to boost profitability.
This historical monument which used to house the Musée d’Histoire Naturelle has undergone a 7.7m euro conversion and will house various enterprises.
The bookshop will occupy 196m2 of the ground floor and offer around 24,000 books while the adjoining café will take up 80m. I read that great care has been taken to preserve the fabric of the building including old fireplaces and solid oak has been used for all woodwork.
It will be open 7/7, 8-23:00. Opening date tba. but soon apparently.
Great news! Let’s also remember and support existing bookstores in town (8), among them Librarie Goulard, the only remaining generaliste, plus of course Book in Bar for your books in English.
Thanks to Jennifer for this info.
Wonderful news – can’t wait to enjoy this!
Me too!!
Thank you so much for the updates on what’s happening in Aix. I love hearing about my favorite city since I am only able to get there once a year. Do you have any information yet on the monthly antique markets on the Cours Mirabeau? We are traveling to Aix in September and I would love to be there for one of those! Thank you, Ann

They don’t seem to put anything online but give out flyers on their stalls, so I will find out and add a post…..probably later this month.
Wonderful!
This is really exciting news! Thanks for sharing.
Yes, looking forward to the opening!
I think its great that the mayor puts on their agenda the importance of culture in our town, not just clothing shops. I read elsewhere that the bookstore is getting a subsidised rent to make this project feasible for them. Such a treat in such a grand building.
I totally agree and can’t wait to visit!
Good to have you back again! Aix is so luck to have such an iconic place.
The Vertual Poetry Corner will continue until we can be together again.
