The not-to-be-missed traditional Marche des Rois takes place on Sunday 12th January. It’s very well-known locally but if you are new to Aix, do make sure you get into town for this special event.
The procession, headed by the three kings with their camels, makes its way through town and is followed by all manner of animals and locals dressed as Provencal characters. It’s always fun, and Aix is usually lucky to have three camels as they are much in demand across the region on this weekend!

Thirsty camel found King Rene’s fountain and refused to budge!
The unexpected can happen. Last year, two sheep took to their heels and shot off down the cours Mirabeau pavement. Another year, something spooked the goats which ran off into the antiques market, followed naturally by all the sheep. The crowd were scattering with parents hauling their kids up on to benches. All very good-humoured!
What will happen this year?
Find out on Sunday – the procession leaves rue Thiers around 14:00, wends down the cours to arrive at the cathedral around 16:00. Punctuated by folk dancing and Provencal music……..a photographer’s delight!
Unfortunately we will miss this Epiphany celebration in Aix, but I thought that I would send this on to you, to let you all know, that while I am in the depths of despair over certain things, I haven’t given up yet! So please click on “read more of this post” so that you too, can be given something to smile about.
