If you haven’t visited the Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, now is the time to bundle the kids in the car and take a trip over there as its famous spring is about to attain its highest level for 25 years. The water, which was very low over the summer, is now pouring over the rocky ledge as it forms the river Sorgue.
The source of all this water has been a matter of investigation for years, and it would seem to come from a massive subterranean system draining from Mont Ventoux, the Lure and adjoining mountain ranges. The spring itself was finally revealed to be 308m deep when a robot reached the bottom.
At the beginning of the week, the water level stood at 23.70m, just 10cm off the record, and when I checked yesterday it had risen to 23.75.
The statistics are thanks to a local lady, Jacqueline, who uses her binoculars to scrutinise measurement panels screwed to the walls of the rock. She passes the information to local authorities and this feeds the ‘Sorgometre’ on the village website. http://www.oti-delasorgue.fr/
This of course is useful information to have before setting off and Jacqueline is predicting another two weeks of high water levels.
You have to park in the village and then walk one kilometre up a gently rising pathway beside the river to reach the source. Definitely worth the trip and there are several cafes to choose from when you come back down.
It’s France’s biggest spring, and the fifth largest in the world: now is a great time to visit!
It was only a couple years ago that you published a post indicating that the source was as its lowest level. Crazy weather!
It really is. Another orange alert for floods today.
