Sadly the ‘2G’ fire also devastated the tiny Pizza Capri which inhabited a niche on the right-hand side of the building. Serving truly delicious pizzas – there were always queues – it had been an institution in Aix since it began back in1983.
Its owner recently retired and the business was taken over by two young men, both local. They employ 40 staff, half based at the cours Mirabeau counter, with others at bases elsewhere in town. The first intimation of a problem came when a very long-serving employee turned up at 6am to ‘open up’ and witnessed the beginning of the fire. Quickly, Pizza Capri staff and operations were moved to the safety of one of the ‘chalets de Noel’ where they could continue their business, with products supplied by their counters in rue Espariat and place Richelme.
Not sure of future plans – it’s early days – but let’s hope they can quickly find a new outlet for their extremely tasty pizzas….
