It’s always a pleasure to step out of the bustling Christmas-shopping crowds into a calm space for a little art appreciation before getting on with life – and there are two galleries in the cours Mirabeau with interesting free exhibitions.
Firstly, there’s some interesting food photography on show at ’21 Bis Mirabeau’, the little departemental gallery just down from Monoprix. The work of nine photographers is featured and this varies from some superb still life studies of items like onions and garlic, to a witty series on eggs, to a video installation of a lady discussing the only possible way to make taboulé! Better than this poster suggests.
It was crowded this lunchtime and I want to go back for a second look. It’s part of the Phot’Aix programme, and also linked into MPG 2019 Année de la Gastronomie en Provence. Until 29 Dec. Wed-Sun, 11:30-18:30.

Setting off up the cours Mirabeau, now, on the opposite side is the venerable ‘Les Amis des Arts’ gallery, open during Cézanne’s lifetime – he actually showed paintings here.
Two women artists are showing there right now: Nadine Poulain has wonderfully colourful splashy oils, featuring the sea, flower-meadows, skies, and often inspired by oriental philosophy. And Marie-Jo Hostache shows people-focused sculptures in clay and bronze. All for sale. Lovely work – take a look! Open daily 10-19, until 28th November.
