Finally coming to an end, the Picasso-Mediterranée series of 60 exhibitions.
They have been popping up in museums around the Med for the past two years and culminate this week at the Musee des Beaux Art in Toulon which is just re-opening after a refurb. The emphasis in this exhibition is on landscapes:
- 20 by Picasso from various periods. I especially look forward to seeing his views of Cadaques, painted with his friend André Derain
- 20 by his contemporaries including Dufy, Braque and Kisling
- 15 photo-landscapes by Lucien Clergue, André Villers, Robert Capa.
It does sound good and this is an easy museum to visit: it’s on the road in from Aix and we’ve always managed (Sunday visits) to park in adjacent side-streets. Best of all, it’s really spacious without many visitors. (Open daily exc Monday, 12-18:00).
Visiting London? An interesting counter-balance will be provided at Tate Modern with the opening of ‘Dora Maar’ on November 20th. It will shine a spotlight on this talented photographer and painter who was flourishing until her tumultuous relationship with Picasso changed the course of her life. Looks to be fascinating…
