When La Canebiere, traditionally Marseille’s main commercial artery, faced competition from newer, glossier, retail outlets, the local Mairie decided to fight back.
‘Les Dimanches de la Canebiere’ see the road closed to traffic on the last Sunday of each month, and opened to all manner of activity – street performances, dance, music, bands, children’s games, street food and market-stalls. Since it started, it’s grown in popularity, and should be even better now that the bottom end of the Canebiere is properly pedestrianised.
Tomorrow, 27th October, the theme is positive ecology and there will be stalls dedicated to recycling and nature; you will also be able to see a model of ‘Pelerin’ a new boat which scoops plastic out of the sea. Clocks change of course so you have an extra hour to enjoy the event. More here: https://quefaireenfamille.com/dimanches-de-canebiere/
Tips: We have always parked without problem under MuCEM, usually quiet on Sundays. Also if you want to sit down for a snack, there’s Green Bear Coffee, 123 Canebiere; good menu for vegetarians and nice loos!
