‘Bibemus’, Paul Cézanne’s oil painting of one of his favourite motifs, the quarries outside Aix, is back in town for the first time since it was painted in 1895. It can be seen at the Hotel Caumont Centre d’Art, along with 5 other of his oils.
In collaboration with The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, New York, the gallery is showing a splendid collection of impressionnist, postimpressionist and avant-garde art, including work by Manet, Picasso, Degas, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Braque and Matisse. It draws on a private collection by the Thannhauser family who were friends and sponsors of some of the greatest names in French art. Luckily for all, these paintings didn’t land up in a bank vault but were bequeathed to the Guggenheim to be enjoyed today.
Explanatory panels are in French and English, and there is a short film on the family background.
