There’s a new installation nearing completion on the Digue du Large – that’s the long breakwater/jetty which stretches out from MuCEM across the docks area at La Joliette.
Containers have been rowed up for 300m, each one bearing a word – Hamac, Rodeo, Zero, for instance – in an installation entitled L’Amiral Doubitchou.
It’s all a comment by artist Alexander Perigot on the number of words in French that come from elsewhere – 30% according to one estimate. He’s chosen short words to decorate the containers, often English but also Persian, Spanish, Russian…
The ‘Amiral’ in the title is Arabic while ‘Doubitchou’ has something to do with Bulgarian cake; the artist feels an affinity between the increasing internationalism of words and the global trade represented by the containers. The whole display stays until 31st October when the containers will be back off round the world on their ships.
Now, the Digue du Large is the first location for a ‘Diner Insolite’, part of the MPG2019 programme I’ve been posting. But the dinner with Lionel Levy is booked out already. Skates on then to get a seat at other dinners taking place at venues like Cezanne’s studio, the Abbaye de Montmajour, the Camargue. Reservations on https://www.mpg2019.com/?lang=en
Lionel Levy’s masterclass for 1000 participants, with 25 chefs, is now fully booked too; but you can watch on big screens – 18:00, Fri 28th June, at the Vieux Port. Fittingly, it involves sardines!
