…why not try Le Vieux Tonneau? It’s an atmospheric wine-bar tucked away in the old town. It takes its name from the old wine casks which you cluster around on high stools to enjoy the wide selection of wines, perhaps accompanied by tapas or planches of cheese or ham. The wines are listed by km from Aix, so you can zero in on the true Provencal choices. Expect to pay 4-5€ a glass.
Le Vieux Tonneau, an after-work favourite with young locals, has been open now for 10 years. Thanks to Lucy for suggesting a drink here last evening!
Inside: you are sitting in an ancient vault, painted dark grey and lit by low-hanging bulbs.
Outside: more wine casks to sit around to watch the world go by.
It’s open evenings only, 18-01:00hrs Mon-Sat.
Find it at 17 rue des Chaudronniers, Aix. (That’s tucked behind Gap.)
