The new show at the Carrieres de Lumieres at Les Baux de Provence, Van Gogh La Nuit Etoilée, starts today, and it looks wonderful.
If you haven’t visited before, this is a truly memorable art experience where hundreds of pictures are projected across the rough hewn walls and floor of a former quarry to the accompaniment of carefully chosen music. What a treat it will be to see 15 mètre high images of sunflowers, irises, olive trees, mixed with portraits of locals, landscapes and buildings, by Van Gogh, so close to where they were painted.
The cinematic techniques seem to get more clever each year …. here Van Gogh’s fragile pink blossom is shown swirling from the branches while other pictures are composed before our eyes. Can’t wait to see it!
Promising too is the ‘short’ film which alternates with the main feature – this year Japan Revé, Images du Monde Flottant.
I always used to add a line to these blog posts to say how unique this experience is but can’t do that anymore since Culturespaces has opened the Atelier de Lumieres in Paris, featuring the same programme!
The catering seems to be getting more organised – they now serve simple sandwich/salad based lunches – though it’s not far into the village where there are several cafés.
Open: daily 10-18;00hrs.
Website: https://www.carrieres-lumieres.com/en. Online booking via this link.
On Until: 5th January 2020
Good to Know: As previous visitors will tell you, it’s cold in these abandoned quarries……take woollies.
We would really love to go to this. Would you like to join us … of course, only when you get over the effects of your trip. We could ask Donal to take us there since in order to go to Les Baux, one has to go by car.
Welcome back. Please let us know when you are settled and are feeling uman again.
