Perhaps you saw ‘Une Femme d’Exception’ last week which told the story of the discrimination suffered by Ruth Bader Ginsburg at the hands of the very male American legal establishment? Now at the Mazarin cinema comes the dramatisation of the injustice meted out to young writer Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, this time by her husband Willy.
She was an innocent young country girl with great talent. He was a charming Parisian publisher who couldn’t write himself and couldn’t manage either his money or his libido.
Her first novel, published under the name ‘Willy’, told the story of Claudine at school, based on her own experiences. It took Paris by storm and, under duress and sometimes lock-and-key, Colette produced another 3 best-sellers which Willy proudly acclaimed.
This biopic follows Colette’s fight back. Keira Knightley is excellent in the lead, and Dominic West too gives a nuanced performance of what could have been just another 19th c bounder.
Perfect for a cold Aix afternoon!
Missed it in a blink of an eye! Do you know where else it might be playing around us?
