You may have already visited Marseille’s J1 for photo exhibitions and marvelled at the stunning space leading out past moored ferries with views to the Mediterranean beyond. Now 100m euro development plans have been agreed and this is what it will look like, in 4 years’ time.
The building, reflecting its maritime past, will be called La Passerelle and will comprise:
- a 130-bedroom Marriott hotel
- a leisure centre with spa
- a climbing wall
- a large arena for augmented reality-based video games and e-sports
- a swimming pool, outside
- a very large paved area with ombriere for shade
- a garden for exotic plants reflecting destinations of the ships that used the jetty
- a panoramic walkway right round the perimeter
- moorings to the south for navettes from cruise ships and the Old Port
- moorings to the north for Corsican ferries and to over-winter yachts
- offices for maritime companies, including an incubator for start-ups
- restaurants and bars, of course.
It was a keenly contested contract – one of the contenders had proposed an aquarium which could have been fun; but the eventual winner was Adim Immobilier Provence who worked with Parisian architects Reichen & Robert.
It appears to be an interesting development – thank goodness no more shops. Opening due in 2023.
