Restaurants and cafes in Aix seem to be in permanent mutation. Maison Nosh (in the cours Mirabeau – great Guatamalan coffee and vegetarian wraps and muffins…) has closed its original café in cours Sextius, premises now occupied by ‘Mr Chou’ which was in the Quartier Mazarin.
The ‘Mr Chou’ story started when Loic Derbay, then a stubborn 5-year-old, insisted, ‘Je veux etre patissier, je veux etre patissier’, which is just what he eventually did.
The culmination of an apprenticeship and extensive training is his salon de thé devoted to traditional French pastries, choux-based being a favourite. As well as offering them in the usual size, there are mini-versions, ideal if you want to make a café gourmand. The ones I tried were delicious. They also do an interesting range of choux salés.
Takeaway or eat in the café – seats outside too, on the cours Sextius.
Apparently clients for takeaways can pull up outside and park free for 10 mins. Or they will deliver.
Open Tues-Sat. http://www.monsieurchou.com/
