That’s the question for the investigators following an incident near Avignon. A bullet went clean through the window of the Paris-Nice TGV and lodged in a head-rest. What a mercy no-one was sitting there. When the train stopped at Marseille, the authorities retrieved the bullet which turned out to be from a hunter’s rifle.
Deliberate or a stray bullet? Investigations are ongoing but SNCF called it an ‘acte de malveillance’.
