What a terrific show at the Caumont Centre d’Art in Aix. It features the work of Marc Chagall, from his black and white gravures from the 1920s and 30s, via his white marble sculptures, to his joyously colourful gouaches and oil paintings.
His small sculptures, featuring entwined couples or biblical scenes even a self-portrait, are a revelation.
Once he returned to France, after his exile in the US during WW2, he became fascinated with pottery, and like Picasso, worked at Vallouris designing and decorating plates and fantastical vases….examples of which are in the show.
His colourful paintings of lovers, village life, circuses, goats and fish, dazzle on the gallery walls. Locals will also recognise the silhouette of Saint Paul de Vence, his adopted home, which appears in various landscapes.
I found it wonderful, both in terms of enjoying familiar colourful paintings but learning more about his black and white works plus pottery and sculptures. Can’t wait to revisit.
