It’s the Galerie des Officiers, the arcaded section you can see in the photo. Each of 5 small rooms has a short film on an aspect of the history of the Fort Saint-Jean, and with it a narrative on the development of Marseille. The first recounts how the tower was a navigation aid during the Greek and Roman times….then you go next door to see the Medieval story…..then Louis IV’s visit when he built the large fortresses…then to the fourth room for the WW2 section.

The films are very short, very visual, with French and English captions, and provide a concise history of the building for new-comers.
The final room has some interesting multimedia displays. There’s one of those speeded-up films of 24 hours at EuroMediterranée……….sun up, sun down, people zipping around and the big boats racing in and out of the docks. Plus a section on the architectural competition held to decide on the future of the site. We are standing in the winning entry by Rudy Ricciotti…………but what could it have looked like? Fascinating!
Entry: Visitors are free to wander around the complex to enjoy the stunning views and the gardens, no tickets needed. But if you want to go into anything, you need a ticket and a sticky lapel badge. The Galerie des Officiers comes under this category.
Thanks for this and all your interesting posts. You do a terrific job of keeping your readers informed about events and much more in the area. I am now moving to a different area. I doubt I will find a replacement for Aixcentric in my new surroundings.
I’m really pleased that you found the blog useful. All the best for your move!
I’ll have to check this out the next time I’m in Marseille. I really like the refurbishment they did of Fort Saint-Jean and its surroundings a few years ago. And he MuCEM building is amazing. Thanks for the info!
I hope you enjoy it…..
