Works by Picasso and Picabia were on show over the summer weeks at Aix’s Musée Granet while a few blocks away, the enigmatic Nicholas de Stael had a solo exhibition at the Caumont Centre d’Art.
Both were popular with summer visitors – but which one had the edge?
Turns out that it was talented, tormented Russian artist de Stael who attracted 184,000 visitors (27 April-23 Sept) while

‘Paysage de Sicile; by Nicolas de Stael,
the shorter-running show at the Granet (9 June-23 September) had 90,000. Of the Granet’s visitors, 36,69% were foreign, Americans being the largest contingent. The Caumont saw more foreign visitors during the summer weeks, as you would expect. People, according to the centre’s director, come to experience the whole package – building, gardens, restaurant and events, as well as the exhibition itself.
Both museums are looking forward to the new Musée Picasso bringing in even more art-lovers to Aix.
The next shows are ‘Traverser La Lumiere’ at the Granet 10th November – 31 March, and Chagall du Noir et Blanc a la Couleur’, 1st November – 24th March.
