Now the children are back to school with their enormous cartables of books (which I read cannot exceed 1/10th of their body weight), maybe it’s time for us adults to take up a  new challenge.

Assogora on Sunday helps us do just that.  With nearly 400 stalls in the cours Mirabeau, this annual festival of associations has info on voluntary work, art classes, pottery, dance, bands, choirs, sports, leisure activities, health – so much to see and so many representatives eager to promote their society. If learning French is on your agenda, the local teachers at Destination Francais have a September offer of 1 free session for every 10 sessions bought.  They prefer to teach by having lunch at a restaurant, exploring the town, navigating the markets; they also have speciality workshops on French cinema,  literature, politics.  An interesting way for adults to learn French in context, rather than from textbooks.  Profitez!  http://www.destinationfrancais.com/

And finally, intellectual stimulation is at hand throughout the autumn at the Institut Américain Universitaire which brings in experts  in a wide range of topics to give free talks. They start on 19th September and run through to the end of November.  The listing is here: lectures fall 18
