Tomorrow, Friday 31st, sees the last of the summer evening markets ‘Les Nuits d’Aix 2018’ in the cours Mirabeau – it’s from 17-23:00 and a wonderful way to spend a warm evening in Provence. That’s followed by the usual markets on Saturday, then on Sunday, the antiques market in the cours and the book market in the place de l’Hotel de Ville, always good for a rummage around. Remember too that it’s the first Sunday of the month so the public museums are free to visit.
That applies to the museums in Marseille too, a good time to visit as it’s also the annual ‘Septembre en Mer’ festival. To kick off the proceedings, Europe’s oldest 3-mast ship, the Belem, arrives in the Vieux Port tomorrow afternoon, accompanied by a veritable armada of small boats; and this is the start of a month’s worth of activities which include visits, hikes on the islands, opportunity to try water-sports and group clean-ups of beaches. Cool poster too….
As we move into September, quite a few exhibitions are coming to a close, so here is a list of the key ones to catch while you can:
23rd Nicolas de Stael, Caumont Centre-d’Art, Aix
23rd Picasso Picabia, Musée Granet, Aix
23rd Bernard Buffet, Musée Estrine, Saint-Rémy de Provence
23rd Chefs d’Oeuvres de la Collection Burrell, Musée Cantini, Marseille
23rd Les Rencontres d’Arles, photography at venues across town
27th Paul Signac, Lumiere du Midi, Musée Yves Brayer, Les Baux de Provence
29th Matisse et Picasso, Musée Matisse, Nice
30th Villers/Picasso – Coup de Soleil, Pavillon Vendome, Aix
30th Jazz & Love, Vieille Charité, Marseille.
The ‘Matisse et Picasso’ had a very interesting review in Paris Match – would love to see that before it closes; nearer to home, I would say the ‘de Stael’ is a must!
