The Musée Cantini has recently re-opened and is hosting an exhibition of paintings from Glasgow’s Burrell Collection, itself now closed for renovation.
Sir William Burrell, a member of a wealthy Scottish ship-building family, was an avid collector of art, and amassed 9000 items which he donated to the city of Glasgow back in 1944. He was drawn to French realism and impressionism and it is 50 of these paintings and drawings which are being shown in Marseille.
One room has a interesting series of works by Eugene Boudin who specialised in painting seascapes, ships and beaches, mainly in Normandy. Having just come inside from a windy boat-ride, we really appreciated how the artist captured the skies and the feel of the elements in his ‘Personnages a la Jetée a Trouville’.
Another small room focuses on small still-lifes, including one by Manet, my favourite part of the show. And then there are the big names: Paul Cézanne (one painting), Degas (one painting), Gustave Courbet, Monticelli, Camille Pissaro, Daumier,..
There is a full programme of activities – films, talks, workshops – supporting this exhibition (list at reception).
