…and they both sound really good. Starting with Marseille, the Musée Cantini is re-opening after some renovations. Its first exhibition will feature works from Glasgow’s Burrell Collection, itself temporarily closed. As you will see on the poster, these include some big-hitting impressionists, among them a landscape by Cézanne. Apparently this is the first time these items have been lent outside the UK.
‘Courbet, Degas, Cézanne…Chefs d’Oeuvres de la Collection Burrell’ starts on 18th May and runs til 23rd September.
Over at Les Baux-de-Provence, another treat is being served up in the shape of ‘Paul Signac, Lumiere du Midi’.
Signac, a painter from the north, was drawn south once his friend and fellow-artist Seurat died. Mooring up in Saint-Tropez during a storm, he established a base there and began painting ports and seascapes, often in watercolour. This exhibition has 30 of these works, borrowed from private collections and museums across France.
It’s at the Musée Yves Brayer whose works are also exhibited. Do make time to visit the Chapel des Penitents Blancs in the village. Brayer decorated it with frescos and it is quite special.
Begins on 19th May. Details: https://www.yvesbrayer.com/fr/
Parking – you have to park outside the village and walk in. When we visited last year, we were caught unawares as there were parking meters which needed 5 euros in change – which we didn’t have, between us…Take your money box!
