La Provence has published an interesting overview on how the SNCF strikes have affected local businesses, a mixed picture emerging.
- Hotel bookings are 15% down according to the Union des Metiers et des Industries de l’Hotellerie. This includes individual reservations and business seminars. They want a speedy resolution before the summer season starts.
- Aix tourist office is having 200 fewer visitors a day and fewer sales of tours and Citypasses; these transactions though are of higher value, so the bottom line remains steady.
- Centre de Congres: no events cancelled yet though there have been timetable-tweaks to allow for changing travel plans.
- Taxis have been badly affected on strike days; but the president du syndicat des artisans du taxi aixois says he understands the cheminots.
- Restaurants are apparently not affected adversely and declare themselves more worried about the weather!

I wonder if the drop in tourism is caused more by the roadwork – especially at the Rotonde (the main sight that visitors come to see) – than the train delays. It would be interesting to see the comparison between train delay outcome and roadwork delay outcomes.
You could well be right. Centre ville is certainly lacking the iconic Provencal ambiance right now! I really feel for the businesses being impacted. Hopefully it will all be worthwhile….
I think the publication of the timetable of the strike dates will have adversely affected tourism especially as many of the dates were over long weekends.
I agree. I hope things settle down and that the summer season goes well for all the hoteliers….
good statistics
