The Cézanne statue at the Rotonde in Aix is the work of Dutch sculptor Gabriel Sterk who not only produced it but also organised its funding: when I interviewed him at the time, he explained that he had recently moved to the town and couldn’t understand why there was no permanent memorial to the artist.
Sterk is also the creator of a poignant statue of Vincent Van Gogh showing the artist holding a few sunflowers to paint – it stands at Saint-Remy just outside the hospital where he stayed.
Now the sculptor has immortalised Picasso for the lovely town of

Mougins. The statue which has just been unveiled stands on the Place des Patriotes, the focal part of the town. At 2.40m high and weighing in at 500 kilos, it will be hard to miss.
It will be a key part of the move to consolidate the legacy of the painter’s time spent in Mougins.
Each week, there will be a guided tour in Picasso’s footsteps, taking in his last home at Notre-Dame-de-Vie (not inside as it is privately owned), the nearby Musée de la Photographie which has many pictures of the artist, and MACM, the brilliant Musée d’Art Classique de Mougins which has some of his works. The tours take place on Tuesdays at 10:30 and reservations are essential (via the tourist office). Apparently there are also tie-ups with local restaurants of which there are many in Mougins!
MACM have an exhibition of the work of Leo Caillard which looks intriguing. It has a companion show running at Kings College London to which the Mougins museum has contributed. Read more about MACM here: https://aixcentric.com/2016/11/12/an-unmissable-new-museum-in-mougins/
They are open daily, 10-18:00hrs, even on all the May holidays!
