When UK papers print their round-ups of 10/20/50 top beaches in Europe, Notre Dame beach at the island of Porquerolles usually features. As it should – it’s lovely. And spring is a perfect time to visit.
You can enjoy the lovely natural setting, hiking or biking from beach to beach via vineyards and Mediterranean vistas. There are no shops, cafés or hotels to spoil the ambiance; the whole island has been owned by the state since 1971, and the only development is around the village where the boat over from the mainland near Hyeres arrives.
But….it does get really busy in the summer. So visit before the tourists arrive and take advantage of a package offered by the tourist authorities: 48 euros for the boat, a meal and bike hire, or 98 euros if you want a hotel room too.
Have a look at the website for details of the restos and their menus, and the hotels: https://www.destination-porquerolles.com/. Offer valid until 30th April.
