Some days ago, I read this comment on Aixcentric:
“In your very comprehensive survey of Aix restaurants, I couldn’t find any mention of House of Cookies, rue Boulegon (but maybe it’s just my mistake!) It’s a lovely place, American vintage-oriented, and the owner, Laetitia, makes the best scones/muffins/ cookies/pancakes in Aix (she makes the cakes for Book in Bar!) You may feel like having lunch there too, one of these days!”
and decided to investigate….
The House of Cookies is one of those little finds in the back-streets of Aix, away both geographically and spiritually, from the increasing number of chains in town.
Its menu is based on American specialities – pancakes, egg muffins, bagels, pecan pie – and its décor reflects this theme. Pushing open the door on Saturday, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but found a cosy room full of chattering young people tucking into huge plates of salad-based lunches.
Mine was delicious – butternut squash no-pastry quiche with greenery, two types of tomato, beans, sprouts, radishes, avocado, almonds, strawberries, pear slices………it was huge. Laetitia told me that she opens at 10 but gets in much earlier to ‘chop, chop, chop’. Serenaded by the Everly Brothers and other fifties/sixties US classics, I managed the salad, but sadly couldn’t contemplate any of the cookies that fill the window.
I had walked past this little café several times, because their name and the window display led me to assume it was just tea and cakes.
So thanks for the tip to Florence. I found out it is much more.
