Time really is of the essence if you haven’t seen the remarkable archaeological dig in the Place des Precheurs. Vestiges of walls, old stairs and caves, all part of the complex of the ancient palace, a Roman tower and nearby dwellings, have been uncovered.
Now the heavy machinery has moved in, later than planned in fact in view of the findings, but inevitably to start the work to pedestrianize the area.
Aggregate has been poured into part of the site, and a new temporary road constructed for vehicular access. When I passed the site on Friday, archaeologists were still working but it must only be a matter of days before most of this disappears from view. Let’s hope they leave a glazed panel to show future generations what lies beneath.
