Two exhibitions are opening in Marseille this week, both dedicated to Picasso, as part of the ‘Picasso-Méditerranée 2017-2019’ cultural programme. (These join the other Picasso-orientated shows which I list further down this post.)
- ‘Picasso et Les Ballets Russes, entre Italie et Espagne’ focuses on four productions by Serge Diaghilev for which Picasso created the sets and costumes. Picasso liked using vivid colors for his sets and costumes because they registered so well with the audience, and drew on the images of Spanish dancing, Neapolitan mythology, religion and even puppet theatre for inspiration. Objects from MuCEM’s collection will add context to the show. 16th Feb – 24 June.

Picasso was inspired by the classical traditions of the Mediterranean region, parts of which he visited, whereas other locations were simply fantasies to feed his paintings. Again, items from the permanent collection at the Vieille Charité will be on show in support of the artist’s work.
PLUS>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
- ‘Picasso and the Spanish Masters’ at the Carrieres de Lumiere, Les Baux, from 2nd March til early 2019.
- ‘Botero Dialogue avec Picasso’ at the Caumont Centre d’Art, Aix, until 11th March
- Picasso La Suite Vollard’, La Malmaison, Cannes, until 29th April.
DON’T Forget>>>>>>>>>>>
There are permanent works by Picasso on show in Aix all year round. You can see 16 of his paintings at the Granet XXe as part of the Collection Planque, and the Musée Granet itself has ‘Femme au Balcon’ (1937) which is in the Collection Meyer on the first floor.
