Delighted to read that there are moves afoot to leave parts of the excavations in les Places des Precheurs et de Verdun visible through glass, for future generations to be able to get a peek into the history of this important spot.
According to ‘Le Mag’, the archaeologists have uncovered significant remains from the Palais Comtal as well as part of the Voie Aurelienne which entered the Roman town here. It turns out it was made from ballast to withstand heavy traffic from chariots! The road crossed the place Verdun diagonally in line with today’s narrow rue Saint-Jean.
The town authorities must now debate which parts should hypothetically be left visible and how much a metal frame, glass, lighting and ventilation will cost. Here’s a link for Le Mag – see page 17: http://www.aixenprovence.fr/Magazine-Aix-le-Mag-Novembre-Decembre-2017
Great! We’ve often said that we wish this would be done – fascinating history below that old market square!
I agree completely. They are still discussing it so fingers crossed!
