Visiting Marseille, MSC Meriviglia
It’s been a bumper weekend for cruise ships in Marseille with 45,000
potential visitors in town. Between Friday and Monday (today), there have been 15 cruise ships docking, including 4 MSC and 5 Costa Croisieres. The size of the vessels has varied from the luxurious Europa with 408 passengers to the 5,700 on board the MSC Meraviglia.
According to La Provence, it’s normally a busy time of year anyway but the industry spokesman believes this peak is very encouraging. Apparently the autumn season, like the spring, is very popular for specifically Mediterranean trips, but also there are more ‘break cruises’ now – these are journeys of 3-4 days designed to attract new people to the cruising experience. Marseille provides an ideal centre for this – the MSC Fantasia which left Marseille on Friday will be back in port today after a mini-cruise.
For the town of Marseille, it’s good news as it extends the holiday season which by this time of year has subsided. And I think it has to be good for Aix as the number of groups going around centre ville has visibly increased recently. Let’s hope they all spend lots of money to support local businesses!
