It’s September and it certainly feels like the peak of the summer heat is over, with a powerful mistral gusting through the Aix market this morning!
Tomorrow being the first Sunday of the month, the municipal museums (ie not private ones like the Caumont) are free. A chance to see the ceramics from the Buffile family (review to come) at the Pavillon de Vendome and the Musée Estienne de Saint-Jean. It’s an opportunity too to visit the Musée Granet to see ‘Passion de l’Art’, before it closes later this month.
It’s a collection of over 100 works from the Galerie Jeanne Bucher Jaeger in Paris. Jeanne Bucher (1872-1946) was a nurse, then a librarian and translator, then a theatre administrator………who moved to Paris and began her career as a galleriste at 50!
Plugged into a rich artistic network, she exhibited and collected art across a wide spectrum, work that her family continue to this day.
Key artists are listed on the poster, surely something to delight everyone. My standouts were the bright oils by de Stael, a beautiful Braque, and an intricate little painting by Kandinsky. And I don’t know who Hans Reichel was but I loved his ‘Poisson rouge dans la Mousse’. The Granet is open 10-19:00 hrs.
You might like your visit to coincide with the annual Blessing of the Calissons which is taking place next door at the church of Saint-Jean de Malte. http://www.benediction-calisson.com/index.php?LANG=EN
