Visitors to Marseille’s MuCEM or the Musée Regards de Provence can eat in either venue, or may like to wander along the main road a little to try Les Halles de la Major which is in the vaults tucked underneath the magnificent 19th century cathedral.
It’s hard to imagine that these vaults were all abandoned for 50 years, until their recent renovation into hip shops and cafés. How this area has changed!
Les Halles is a large space laid out like a food court. There are 11 commerçants offering dishes based on top quality local products. You simply choose whatever takes your fancy, then join your friends who have found their favourite dishes, at one of the tables inside, or outside on the terraces.
There are stalls offering fish dishes, charcuterie, Asian bowls or tapas. The Italian traiteur has pizzas, pastas and gnocchi. There’s a great array of desserts on another kiosk, plus home-made ice-creams. I made for the salad counter and had a copious plate of salad, avocado, mozzarella and local panisses. (16€).
They do take-aways and sell foodie products too. It’s open daily 9:00 – 23:00. Find it at 12 Quai de la Tourette.
