‘Obsession’ in Aix
May 29, 2017 by aixcentric
The next broadcast from the National Theatre of London to Aix will be ‘Obsession’, starring Jude Law (The Young Pope, Closer, The Talented Mr Ripley), live from the Barbican Theatre.
Gino is a drifter, down-at-the-heels but magnetically handsome. At a roadside restaurant he encounters a husband and wife, Giuseppe and Giovanna. Irresistibly attracted to each other, Gino and Giovanna begin a fiery affair and plot to murder her husband. But in this chilling tale of passion and destruction, the crime only serves to tear them apart.
Ivo van Hove directs this new stage adaptation of Luchino Visconti’s 1943 motion picture. Visconti based his film on a novel by James Cain called The Postman Always Rings Twice, (later remade as a Hollywood film noir by the same name.) Visconti’s film was banned by the Italian Fascists and the Church, and later destroyed by the Fascists. Luckily, Visconti had secretly kept a copy…
All this should make for a chilling, thrilling afternoon.
